Lactose Broth

Use: Broth medium used for the detection and/or verification of the presence of coliform organisms in water, foods, and dairy products.

Description: Lactose Broth is prepared according to the formulation specified by the APHA for use as a fermentation broth medium in the microbiological analysis of food, milk products, and water. The broth is used to detect and/or verify the presence of lactose fermenting, Gram negative, aerobic microorganisms. In the examination of milk products, Lactose Broth is used only for the completed test. The determination and confirmation of coliforms in water other than drinking water is performed by using Lactose Broth. Lactose Broth provides good growth characteristics for coliforms and fermentation is observed by gas bubbles present in an inverted fermentation tube. The concentration of media prepared for the test should be adjusted to accommodate for a volume of sample greater than 10mL.
